BiographyNEXT BIG THING MAGAZINE INTERVIEW

Describe the style of music that you prefer playing.

Theres nothing better than dropping a phat funky bassline with mind blowing vocals. It cant be monotonous; the music needs to create an atmosphere. Its needs to be dynamic and develop through the full length of the song.

Clean solid beats & intelligent melodies make for great listening and wicked grooves you know the stuff dreams are made of!

What gave you the inclination to enter the SYLD Competition?

A friend of mine actually told me to enter it, after reading up on it I thought it would be a great way to get to know more people in the scene and a nice way to play at some new venues.

Who do you see as your main opponents in the competition?

What with a field like this its really difficult to single out an individual. But I would have to say Lloyd if you pushed me for an answer. Weve played together a couple of times and he is really talented!

How do you view competitions like SYLD as a means of exposure and breaking into the industry?

SYLD is amazing. The interest it generates is huge. People start paying attention to the local djs more. The clubs also get to hear about us, and even though we have a strong club scene in SA all the exposure is well good Its also a great way for people out there who have not had a break to get noticed. We need more competitions of this caliber. Keep them coming!

For you, what are the most critical skills an up-n-coming DJ needs in order to succeed in the industry?

Passion , you need to do it for the love of the music and the crowds you need to have serious determination , YOU ARE going to get messed around a lot and your going to feel like quitting but keep at it !! when you get playing some of the skills you need are firstly to be able to read a crowd , when you find out what they want keep feeding em what they want and ul drive them insane, You also need to create a presence behind the decks , there is nothing worse than seeing a DJ behind the wheels that looks bored , come to life and so will the punters!

And most importantly attitude , Treat the people that support you with respect after all if it were not for them you would be no where!

What advice do you have for other up-n-coming DJs in terms of marketing themselves?

That's quite a hard question! Everyone has their own way of marketing themselves. If anything, my only advice would be to keep on playing. Create experiences for the audience! it is really all about keeping the people dancing , Re-invent yourself keep it fresh and play what you want to play and not what people want you to play!

Also getting to know people in the industry is always a big help , When your at a club go speak to the DJ , ask him/her what they did and if they can offer you any advice , I make a point of listening to the people that come up to me , I know how hard it is to break into the scene and if I can I do my best to help them out or point them in the right direction.

What is your view on local DJ's producing and do you have any plans on producing yourself?

Firstly our local stuff is top notch, I find myself dropping a lot of local tracks during my sets and I rate it right up there! If you can produce I would recommend it, it's a sure way to get noticed! As for my production I am getting back into it, I produced my first set of tracks when I was in high school and 2 of them were signed by Sheer. The local production scene was EXTREMLY slow back in those days most of the record companies were looking to the international guys , I decided to drop out of scene for a bit and to focus on my DJing.

But I think its high time I brought something out , watch this space!

Have you played at any venues, if so where and how did you get the gig?

Yes quite a few actually , I got my break with Lady Lea (THANK YOU !!) when I first moved to JHB from Durban she got me some gigs and booked me for a few of her Sweet Sessions parties she also put me in touch with the right people, I gave out a few demos and got my first serious gig in JHB at Groove Café , they then moved me from Groove Café to Groove Bar and I played as a resident there for 2 years (Thanks Grant).

From Groove Bar I then received bookings to play for Kiss and have played for them for the past 2 years (Cheers Chad!) I am now also currently a part of the USM almost famous crew for USM records.

I am also featuring in regular guest slots at ESP and have made guest appearances at Su Da Da , Roxy's , Esco Bar , Aruba Lounge , Tilt , Carfax and many more

If you could drop a set in any club (or at any event) in the world which one would you choose, and why?

Well Locally I am keen to play for an H20 Event , so my sites are on you guys! Our local parties and crowds are awesome and I would say that H20 is one of the biggest events in South Africa and for me it would be great exposure.

Internationally I would be keen to play at Gods Kitchen or Fabric I think the names speak for themselves.

If you could cut off the fingers of another DJ in the business, who would it be?

Um I really don't know! I don't want to cut anyones fingers off! I might think about a digit here or there. But on the whole its all good. If I had to tell you who my favorite Dj's are I would have to say Mimi Kesaris , Mark Porter (Tilt) Mark Farina and Linus from Style Of Eye.

What is your signature DJ move?

I flick the slider like its having a seizure on build ups , really gets the crowds going oh and I love switching that's always fun!
ExperienceGrey started djing over 9 years ago Providing soundtracks for house parties in Durban, With his parents not showing the keenest of interests in Greys decided future, he did what he had to do and sold his own car to finance his first array of equipment and vinyls like from this idol the legendary Mimi Kesaris Record Shop (BPM RECORDS)

Swiftly frustrated by Durbans limitations in the dance scene and it being far too small to accommodate Greys larger than life presence, Grey moved to secure his future in JHB dance venues. During his ever-expanding career Grey has shared the stage with a wide array of key South African Djs such as, Mimi Kesaris, Ryan Dent, Phat Jack, Lady Lea Brett Jackson, Funky G, Saint Nick, Marc Porter and many more!

Grey has also participated in major events such as Kiss (All Events), Caf© de Afrique, Sweet sessions ,All Good parties,Sensations,Carfax and Is recently featuring in the Deeper Sounds of Parties for USM Records and also playing in regular slots at ESP.

Grey Currently holds a residencey for Groove Bar and has been part of the club now for nearly 2 years, During his sets you will hear a blend of Funky,Electro House mixed fairly rapidly as so you the audience stay on your toes.
