The mantra that bore through our brain, begged the question: "wherearewegoing? Wherearewegoing?"Posted 01/27/08 by macpromikem
We knew where we were going, but we seemed lost on the highway, in the darkness, in a strange RV, on the way to ...

Burningman. Yes, that is where we were going, I considered to myself as we four drove endless miles through the desert, in the dead of night, drifting along the freeway, a big six-wheeled boat of a vehicle. Drifting along.

"Where are we going?" Je'Nat asked again.

"Honey, we are going a few miles past some small town called Gerlach, out onto the Black Rock playa. It'll be fun. You'll see." I said, wondering if where we were going was truly the end of the rainbow or a hellish experience in the desert to learn self-survival skills with a bunch of drugged out hippies - of which I was already one of them. "You'll see. You'll have your moment of truth out there. I just don't know what kind it will be."

After hours of driving the the big RV we named Moonbeam, we began to see the differnence in the scenery - it was becoming more bleak and flat. The two girls, Je'Nat and her friend, Camille, were asleep.

Scott was not, sitting shotgun, loading a pipe. "Should I expect sex?"

"I think if anyone is going to see 'Mr. White', it'll only be after you are covered in playa-dust and doff whatever little you are wearing and run naked after the water truck that drives around periodically to wet the ground." I said matter-of-factly.

Camille, a dead-ringer for singer Debby Harry in the original Hairspray movie, muttered. "Oh, that'll be divine."

"I thought you were asleep!" I said, wanting to quickly change the subject. "Hey! Are you and Camille going to the Caribe Club to meet Katie? Stop the Revolution plays at midnight, don't forget, right behind the Man at the perimeter of the playa." I was hoping that would remind him that I wanted a few hours alone to shroom that night, even if the bed in the RV has a broken frame, I thought, I'll crash on it.

"Yeah, I think we're going to see that. Kinda depends on the elements since it's supposed to be windy," said Camille. "And I heard there will be drifts of sand foot level - cause there was no rain on the playa this year. Be super sure to wear shoes, it said on the Burningman.com site, otherwise your feet won't be silent - even after a single day."

"Just try to remember that, dad," Je'Nat chimed in. "We need you to be able to walk away from the burn, too, so you can drive us home!"

===========

In retrospect, this set is much like Burningman: it has color, it has flare, it has mystery, it has funk, it has sweeping landscapes of sound with drama evocative of Burningman itself. I had tears in my eyes when I said goodbye! Did you notice? Did you notice? Everything about this set speaks Burningman.

So, escape the default world! Come with us to Burningman where you will never, ever be the same. Take the journey to the burn, as soon as you possibly can. Time is of the essence.

And then, and then you will never, ever ask the question, WHEREAREWEGOING? as posed by Jared Kelly here.

You are going home, home to Burningman, where the default world ceases to exist, where you explore all of your senses as your mind expands outward to encompass the vastness of life in an instant, on the playa.

This set can take you there, if you but close your eyes and drift away.

And think: life is BURNINGMAN!

Five Superlative Stars.
